In its heyday, the silhouette was a popular and elegant form of portraiture. These portraits were rarely called silhouettes in England until the early 19th century but rather "shades" or profiles. The name silhouette was adopted from a well known French financier, Monsieur Etienne de Silhouette (1709 -1767), who was entrusted by Madame de Pompadour with putting his country's finances back in order after a period of gross extravagance. These severe little black shades seemed a perfect example of frugal economy. He is looking quite formidable with his bearskin helmet. If he survived his tour of duty, he would have returned to live a life of relative luxury. 6.5 "w x 7"h.
